Go behind the scenes on sleep data with Deepika and Vikas

After years of hard work and collaboration, our team members Deepika and Vikas, presented their project, SCALEX, at the Monster Scale Summit. SCALEX aimed to revolutionize the scalability and efficiency of the smart bed ecosystem, processing 30 billion data points daily. The data is collected from both the pressure and temperature sensors in our smart beds and turned into meaningful insights. This information helps us conduct our research and helps our smart sleepers better understand their sleep through the Sleep Number app.

The greatest challenge was to move from managing a few thousand devices to millions, all while keeping the system secure, efficient and ready for whatever comes next. SCALEX wasn’t just about managing today’s data but building a future-proof platform that could easily handle new technologies and sensor upgrades down the line.

“SCALEX was my first major project at Sleep Number, 6 years ago. I had complete ownership from inception to execution, and it was exciting to build a scalable, resilient cloud platform that now processes billions of data points daily for nearly 3 million sleepers. I led efforts to optimize our data pipeline, ensuring it was cost-effective, reliable and future-proof. I also worked on translating complex biometric data into actionable insights that users could easily understand, enhancing engagement and product value. As new sensors and features were added, I ensured the system could adapt seamlessly without starting from scratch. My passion lies in closing the gap between technology and consumer insights. I’m driven by the opportunity to leverage IoT and sleep science to empower people, and I’m excited by how much more we can achieve in this space.”

“I brought my problem-solving mindset to the SCALEX project, where I was passionate about driving key innovations to help the platform scale seamlessly. I optimized the cloud infrastructure to handle growth from a few thousand to over 1.8 million devices, ensuring stability and scalability. I also worked on cluster resizing strategies to reduce costs while maintaining high performance and implemented 24/7 monitoring to ensure reliability and data integrity. To minimize risks during transitions, I helped to introduce feature flagging, allowing old and new systems to run concurrently for a smooth integration. I’m driven by a passion for technology and problem-solving, and I love seeing how our work empowers users by giving them meaningful insights to improve their sleep and wellness.”
